UNLV Colorguard Announcement

It is still not too late to register for MUSE 115 (university marching band) to participate in this year’s colorguard. For those who may know of interested colorguard persons, please refer such contact names and e-mails directly to Matt Pfliger at unlvrebelguard@yahoo.com.  Matt will be happy to answer questions regarding the group.

It is important that a minimum of ten (10) colorguard members are registered in the group to constitute a viable performing unit.

Common colorguard related questions/scenarios:

“I have to work a lot, but can I still be in the guard?”

Yes. There is a small but regular percentage of part time students that regularly perform with the group. Anyone can register for up to eight (8) credits per semester without even being admitted to UNLV!

“Do I have to register to be in the group?”

Yes. Registration is mandatory and also helps maintain consistency at rehearsals and performances, not to mention the one (1) academic credit that can be applied as an elective to almost any degree at UNLV.

“How much is it to register for colorguard?”

$129.50 is the per credit rate for classes at UNLV. Marching Band (MUSE 115) is a one credit class. Anyone can register on-line. Of course, credit cards are accepted.

“I don’t think I ever want a college degree. Why should I register for something that I may never use?”

Employers want to recruit, retain and reward good employees; even those without college degrees. In many cases, employers view even part time college course work as beneficial to the workplace, employee development and leadership potential.

“I’m not that strong as I’d like to be. Should I still participate?”

Most students will tell you college colorguards and marching bands are neither better nor worse than the high school group you may remember – it’s just different. Unlike many competitive high school units, college colorguards are geared toward a variety of shows in a season and are quickly learned via the experience and talent of the group’s members.

“I was in a great colorguard at my high school. Why would I want to be in a college guard that does not seem as competitively or artistically driven?”

The differences between high school and college guard experiences can be vast. Both are equally valid for different reasons. Again, neither is better than the other, just different!
